NFL Mock Draft 2014: Minnesota Vikings Select Justin Gilbert

With the eighth overall pick in the 2014 Canal Street Chronicles community mock draft, the Minnesota Vikings (represented by JackMarzullo) select...

Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State

With all three of the top QBs off the board and the top two OLBs out as well, the Vikings are in a bit of a conundrum since those are their top two needs as we draw closer to the draft. In my opinion, this leaves the franchise to select the biggest playmaker still on the board. Whether the Vikings plan on looking to trade up back into the first round to draft Derek Carr or staying put in the 2nd round and getting ole Zach Mettenberger, the Vikings should look to address their defense in the first round. While Khalil Mack probably is the top rated defensive prospect on their board, he will most likely be gone. With that said, the Vikings should look to improve their paltry secondary. Despite grabbing Xavier Rhodes last year in the first, I believe the Vikings should go that direction again to further strengthen the unit in general. The pass defense of the team was abysmal. They ranked 31st in yards allowed and 29th in QBR against. Long story short, this team needs a secondary player.

The team struck gold with Xavier Rhodes, as he proved a very reliable option on the outside. He will surely have a bright future. But across from him, there are huge concerns. The other CB in Minny, Chris Cook, has been a complete bust and hasn't even recorded an interception since his arrival 4 years ago.

I believe CB is the way to go, and Justin Gilbert has all the tools and measurables to be a lock down corner in the league today. By using his lightning speed and his uncanny coverage skills, Gilbert is currently rated as the top DB in this draft class.

The Vikings need one more DB to form a very young, formidable secondary along with Rhodes and SS Harrison Smith. I believe Gilbert can be that guy who can upstart this defense and begin it's retooling process.
