NFL Mock Draft 2014: New York Giants Select Eric Ebron

With the twelfth overall pick in the 2014 Canal Street Chronicles community mock draft, the NY Giants (represented by Khannar) select...

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Eric Ebron, TE, UNC

Eli Manning is coming off a less than stellar year, to say the least, having thrown twenty seven interceptions to only eighteen touchdowns. These less than mediocre stats are probably a mark of the decline of the younger Manning brother, but the Giants will fight that decline tooth and nail for future chances at Superbowls with Manning's uncanny ability to win games in the playoffs. This is why they have signed some insane number of free agents from other rosters, I believe ranking second with fifteen new players. However, with the loss of Hakeem Nicks, Manning could use more targets if the Giants are to compete for a playoff berth in the near future.

Enter Eric Ebron.

Ebron is a very athletically gifted tight end out of UNC who could provide a solid target for Manning from the tight end position, which is a pretty weak position for on the Giants roster. He routinely finds and takes advantage of openings on the field to make big plays in, and has an outstanding set of hands, making one handed grabs look like a regular thing. Defensive backs are mismatched against him, as he uses his 6'4", 250 pound frame to box them out for jump balls. When he plays, he looks like a big wide receiver with his hands and athleticism rather than a tight end, which is a huge boon for a team's passing game. The biggest knocks on him are his lack of blocking ability, which it seams becomes less and less important for a tight end every year, and what has been perceived as his loud, egotistical attitude, which could rub some people the wrong way.

The Giants top receiving option on the roster is currently Victor Cruz. After him lurk Rueben Randle, who is primed for a break out year if he can put everything together, and Mario Manningham, who hasn't scared anyone since his miracle catch in the last Giants Pats Super Bowl. The addition of Ebron could potentially provide Manning with enough targets to make a regular season push to make the playoffs. And once he's there, he very well may have one more miracle play in the Super Bowl to get himself another ring.
