NFL Mock Draft 2014: Arizona Cardinals Select Derek Carr

With the twentieth overall pick in the 2014 Canal Street Chronicles community mock draft, the Arizona Cardinals (represented by Alex Swift) select...

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Spor

Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State

At 6'2, 214, Carr is an average sized quarterback with good vision and decent mobility, running the 40 in just 4.69 seconds. Despite feeling nauseous, and getting an IV from trainers before his pro day, Carr threw exceptionally well, and may have increased his draft stock by doing so. After leading the nation in yards, with 5,082, and touchdowns, 50, Carr won the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year award, for the second season in a row.

Carr has a big arm, with comparisons to Matthew Stafford. He has also shown an ability to quickly pick up new offenses, working first in a pro-style offense under former head coach Pat Hill, while he moved to a spread offense under Tim DeRutyer. Carr's big arm should be helpful to the Cardinals, with star wideout Larry FItzgerald and unheralded Michael Floyd in the mix. A revamped Cards offensive line should give him enough time to make most throws, especially with his underrated ability to move in the pocket.

Carr gives the Cardinals a young QB to turn to should veteran Carson Palmer falter. Carr will get to learn a lot under the former USC quarterback, who has also played in Cincinnati and Oakland. Carr also has pedigree- older brother David was the Texans first ever draft pick. The scouting reports for the brothers read very similarly- explosive arm, highly accurate, good mobility, cracks under pressure. It's that last point that will scare teams away, but given a good enough offensive line (unlike the one David was exposed to in Houston), and Derek Carr will be looked at as one of the best picks in the 2014 draft.
