NFL Mock Draft 2014: Oakland Raiders Select Khalil Mack

With the fifth overall pick in the 2014 Canal Street Chronicles community mock draft, the Oakland Raiders (represented by Khannar) select...

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

Khalil Mack, LB, Buffalo

The Raiders are currently in a situation where they could draft at almost position to improve their roster. That is not to say that they have a very weak roster: they picked up a lot of potential talent in free agency with the signings of Matt Schaub, Maurice Jones-Drew, James Jones, Donald Penn, Austin Howard. Justin Tuck, LaMarr Woodley, Antonio Smith, Tarell Brown, and Carlos Rogers. However, a lot of these players could be thought of as past their prime, and the pressure is on Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen to bring in impact players with a bright future in the league through the draft.

So I'm mocking Khalil Mack to the Raiders.

Jack Lambert Award winning Khalil Mack is a four year starter for Buffalo who led his team in sacks all four years. He currently holds the NCAA record for most forced fumbles in a career at 16, and is tied for first with 75 tackles for loss. His senior stat line is as follows: 100 tackles, 56 solo, 44 assists, 19 tackles for loss for -98 yards, 10.5 sacks for -79 yards, 3 interceptions for 125 yards and 2 TDs, 10 passes defended, 3 fumbles recovered, and 5 forced fumbles. He is willing to play a variety of positions, in one interview stating that he didn't want to limit himself and spent time with the defensive line, linebackers, and defensive backs to keep himself sharp.

The Oakland Raiders were tied for 18 last season with 38 sacks. Lamarr Houston led the team with 6. Houston is gone now, and Tuck and Woodley have been added. However, both have been in decline, the Steelers resigning of Jason Worilds being one sign of this, and Justin Tuck being available to sign that the Giants, who love defensive ends, didn't value him anymore. Both of these veterans could mentor the rookie Mack to become a truly dominant player for the post-Al Davis Raiders.
