With the 126th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints have selected Cal linebacker Khairi Fortt. While the position picked, linebacker, may not come as much of a surprise, the player selected is. Fortt's name has not come up in mid/late round mocks and he's a bit of an unknown commodity at this early stage. The biggest reason he was selected may be due to the Saints' need of a coverage linebacker for late down passing situations.
Here is a snippet from SB Nation's California Golden Blogs regarding Fortt's draft profile:
Fortt also occasionally flashes into intermediate coverage in zone defense, and does have good instincts at playing the ball and avoiding pass interference penalties. You’ll see him get his paws on a few plays and make it difficult for the receiver to come down with the ball.
Hopefully Fortt can fill a need in coverage and provided sorely needed solid special teams coverage. Wait and see, folks.
