2014 NFL Draft Results: Saints Select Vinnie Sunseri with 167th Pick in Fifth Round

USA TODAY Sports

With the 167th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints have selected strong safety Vinnie Sunseri from Alabama.

And with that, Rob Ryan and the Saints add yet another safety to their defensive backfield. Not sure they really needed to take another one, especially considering offensive line is still the biggest remaining need.

Sunseri is listed at 5-11, 210-pounds. Here is a quick overview from NFL Draft Scout:

The son of former Alabama assistant coach and current Florida State defensive ends coach Sal Sunseri, Vinnie's instincts, toughness and penchant for the big play made him a fan favorite for the Crimson Tide.

Unfortunately, his lack of ideal measureables and recovery from a torn ACL make his projection to the NFL much less favorable.

With sophomore sensation Landon Collins effectively replacing Sunseri following his injury suffered Oct. 19 against Arkansas, the junior made the decision to enter the NFL with a year of eligibility remaining. He leaves Alabama with 105 career tackles and four interceptions, including two in 2013. Each of the interceptions during his injury-shortened junior campaign Sunseri returned for touchdowns, coming against Virginia Tech's Logan Thomas and Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel.
