Saints News, 6/23/14: Brandin Cooks, Drew Brees To Practice Together In San Diego

Unlike most players bound for the NFL, Cooks stayed enrolled after the 2013 football season at Oregon State because he promised his mother he would graduate. Since Oregon State is on an 11-week, quarter system instead of the customary two-semesters-a-year format, he missed all of the Saints’ mini-camp two weeks ago and most of the team’s voluntary practices in recent weeks while he was in school in Corvallis, Ore. Cooks had his first exposure to full squad practices with the Saints last week during two voluntary organized team activity sessions. “I’ll go back to Oregon State this week and work out a little bit,” Cooks said. “And after that, I’ll go down to San Diego and train with Drew Brees and get familiar with him and get clicking.”

"It’s a dream come true I’m able to do that," Cooks said. "I’m excited. I’ll probably spend a couple of weeks with him. It’s very critical due to the fact that I missed about two or three weeks in OTAs (organized team activities – practice) and haven’t been able to throw with him all day. So that’s what we’ll get done while I’m out there."

Thanks to the NFL's nonsensical rule that blocks draft picks from joining their teams until the conclusion of exams that the draft picks aren't taking anyway, the Saints didn't get to see much of first-round receiver Brandin Cooks during offseason workouts.

The Saints appeared to have stolen Butler out of free agency prior to the 2013 season, landing a potential starter for the affordable price of $3 million over two years. Butler has yet to make his Saints debut, however, after suffering an ACL tear last June. A full year removed from that injury, Butler should add another athletic, pass-rushing piece to Rob Ryan’s aggressive 3-4 scheme — a scheme, by the way, that resurrected the Saints defense from a bottom-of-the-barrel outfit to a top-five attack in 2014.
