Saints Roster Countdown 2014: #35 Austin Johnson

Even though the New Orleans Saints are taking the day off from training camp practices, 90 players are still in the running for the right to wear black and gold in September. And here at CSC, we continue counting down the days until the Saints regular season by taking a brief look at the roster. Today we check out #35 (FB) Austin Johnson!

As we count down from 50 days until the New Orleans Saints begin their regular season in Atlanta, on September 7th, we're getting to know a little bit about those players who have signed on to bring home another Lombardi trophy.

Today, we take a brief look at fullback Austin Johnson!

So, with no more ado:

#35 FB Austin Johnson (1st year)

A four-year letterman at Tennessee, Austin Johnson went undrafted in 2012.  Although he visited with the Saints leading up to the 2012 NFL Draft, he was picked up as a UDFA by the Baltimore Ravens in April, after the draft.  New Orleans picked him up at the end of that season, and have juggled him around since.  Although this will be his third season since Baltimore first picked him up, this will be his first official season as an NFL player if he makes the roster.

At Tennessee, Johnson appeared in 43 career games and posted totals of 126 tackles (64 solo), one sack, 10 tackles for a loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, five interceptions and one pass defensed.  The Hickory, NC, native had spent his first two seasons in college at fullback, and then converted to linebacker as a junior.  A three-time Academic All-SEC selection, Johnson started all 12 games of his senior year at middle linebacker, and led the Volunteers with 81 tackles (41 solo) and four interceptions, which tied for the NCAA lead by linebackers and ranked fourth overall in the conference.

This year, Austin Johnson's training camp started out with a splash... of sorts.  Not only were he and Andy Tanner assigned to share a room; but said room only has one king bed.  Considering both players' luck when it comes to securing a spot on the roster, what does it portend that they are literally in the same bed this preseason?  Well, take a look at his transaction history thus far:

1/7/13... Signed by Saints to reserve/future contract
9/1/13… Signed to practice squad
9/18/13… Released from practice squad
9/24/13… Re-signed to practice squad
