Saints News, 9/11/14: Saints Serious About Fixing Tackling Woes

New, comments

From Mike Triplett at ESPN.com: "By Wednesday, the New Orleans Saints' defensive backs made it clear they were tired of hearing about and talking about their tackling woes in Sunday’s 37-34 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. As The Times-Picayune chronicled, at one point during interviews, cornerback Keenan Lewis just started blurting out the word, "Tackle," regardless of the question he faced....Safety Kenny Vaccaro called his tackling problems in Week 1 "ridiculous" and said (per The Advocate), 'I had a hard time sleeping this week because of the film we put out there.'"

New Orleans Saints serious about fixing tackling woes - ESPN
By Wednesday, the New Orleans Saints' defensive backs made it clear they were tired of hearing about and talking about their tackling woes in Sunday’s 37-34 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. As The Times-Picayune chronicled, at one point during interviews, cornerback Keenan Lewis just started blurting out the word, "Tackle," regardless of the question he faced.

A constant issue for the Saints was the space that appeared between their safeties and their underneath coverage. Not only were the Saints safeties regularly lining up in deep positions, but they were also dropping further downfield at the snap. Jairus Byrd in particular was often dropping into zones that completely took him away from positions where he could impact the game.

Greer started 60 games for New Orleans over that span, including the Super Bowl XLIV win that made him and his teammates the most celebrated team in the history of the franchise. It wasn’t a run that will end with a yellow blazer, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good and long one for a player who will be getting rousing ovations at any Saints game he might attend in the future.
