Welcome to Saints Gameday!
Today:
New Orleans Saints (4-5) at Washington Redskins (3-5)
The Saints take the field today against the Redskins with the opportunity to get back to the .500 mark going into next week's bye. The discouraging loss at home last week has painted today's game as a bleak picture. In reality, last week's game was actually pretty unsurprising, I wrote this in last week's pregame post:
This sounds pretty easy, right?
It also sounds like a trap. Despite their 1-6 record, Tennessee fields a top-five defense, which will be more difficult to score points on than any of the Saints' previous opponents on their current three-game winning streak. New Orleans also has a frustrating habit of allowing rookie quarterbacks to have their best game of the season against them. Now that Marcus Mariota is returning from injury today, the Saints need to keep that ugly pattern from continuing.
The Saints can't afford to take the Titans for granted today. This game should be all Saints on paper, but in reality, today's game could be far closer than it has any business being. Don't "eat the cheese" and don't fall for a trap today.
The Saints absolutely fell for the trap last week, but that doesn't mean they're doomed this week. Washington is actually a step worse than Tennessee on offense in both yards and points. Washington is significantly worse on defense as well, falling more in line with more favorable recent opponents like Indy and New York. Sure, the Saints should've beat a "terrible" opponent last week, but football is all about matchups, and due to Tennessee's matchup and emotional advantages last Sunday, they got a razor-thin victory over the Saints. Those advantages don't translate into today's game.
New Orleans will score on this Washington defense, and the Saints defense, thankfully, faces the worst statistical offense they have faced all season. As bad as this Saints defense is, they desperately need a matchup like this going into the bye week. Best of all, there isn't a rookie quarterback waiting to have the game of his life against them. I get being down on the Saints in this spot, but this game is very winnable, and win they will. Who Dat!
