NFL Mock Draft 2015: Pittsburgh Steelers Select Marcus Peters

With the 22nd pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers (represented by whodatgermany) select...

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

Marcus Peters, CB, Washington

The Steelers offense was among the best in 2014, after the addition of DeAngelo Williams, talent seems to be stockpiled at most positions. That is why Mike Tomlin and GM Kevin Colbert will turn to the other side of the ball, a defensive unit that finished just 17th in terms of yards allowed. While yielding a little over 350 yards a game is not exactly horrible, the Steelers were not content with the rather mediocre performance on defense. Subsequently Keith Butler, who previously coached the linebackers under Dick LeBeau, was appointed defensive coordinator. While the front seven lacks an elite pass-rusher, the secondary was woeful more times than not. After Ike Taylor and Troy Polamalu announced their respective retirements and with Brice McCain -arguably the team's best corner last year- heading to Miami, the back end of the Steelers stop unit appears to very thin. An infusion of talent is needed at either position.

With Landon Collins off the board, I chose from Marcus Peters, Kevin Johnson and Byron Jones. All prospects are intriguing but the Washington standout Peters provided the best value at this point. A top 10 player from a talent perspective, I trust the Steelers coaching staff to handle his character and make the most of this great value selection. Peters is without a doubt the best corner in this class and makes up for his athletic limitations with outstanding technique and ball skills.
