NFL Mock Draft 2015: New York Jets Select Vic Beasley

With the sixth pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the New York Jets (represented by BlackandGold4ever) select...

Sam Sharpe-USA TODAY Sports

Vic Beasley, OLB, Clemson

No matter who the Jets pick here, there is bound to be a smattering of boos from the crowd in New York.  Many are probably wondering why Mariota isn't the pick here.  Well, after the last two high-profile busts at QB in New York, I think the Jets are going to be hesitant to risk another one with this pick.  Plus Fitzpatrick is the quintessential stopgap (filled the role perfectly in Houston) for a team that is trying to work their way back up from the bottom.

So why Beasley?  Obviously his performance at the combine didn't hurt him at all.  He was able to actually add about 15 pounds to his frame and still run a 4.53 40 and get in 35 reps at the bench press.  I'm thinking the added bulk is a sign that Beasley is looking to handle shedding blocks better and address the notion that he relies on athleticism alone.  And if he is able to bring that to fruition on the field, the Jets will be very happy with this selection.  Beasley was already able to capitalize on his speed and athleticism alone to set the record for sacks at Clemson.

Strengths: Quick off the snap, can turn body to edge rush around the corner, great spin move, good hands, can drop into coverage, good instincts, "fluid hips", and good feet (played RB in past).

Weaknesses: Needs more muscle (although he is working on that), needs to use spin move more, short arms, doesn't shed blocks well against run.

As for his fit with the Jets, consider the fact that they hired a defensive coach and that Sheldon Richardson led the team with 8 sacks last season.  Sheldon Richardson is a beast and all, but he was drafted as a defensive tackle.  The Jets need some help in the edge rush and that is what Beasley does best.  And Mariota has far too much bust potential for the Jets to risk picking him here.

Bring on the boos and share your thoughts in the comments section...I'm sure this will be a lively discussion.
