New Orleans Saints All-Time Draft Picks: Round 17

A retrospective on the best draft picks in Saints history in each round.

In this series we will be taking a look at players from throughout Saints history who have been drafted by the team round by round. You folks will get to select who you think is the best player the Saints drafted in each individual round.

There have been as many as 30 rounds in the NFL draft. When the Saints came into the league in 1967 that number had been whittled down to 17 which is where we will start. The NFL draft was reduced from 17 rounds to 12 in 1977 so there is a very small number of players selected by the Saints in this round.

The Saints had 3 picks in the 17th round in 1967 and their final selection was Jimmy "J.J." Walker who would go on to star in Good Times and then later on as Ann Coulter's beard. Okay, maybe it's not the same guy but it sure is fun to think so.

Only 4 players that the Saints selected from this round ever played in an NFL game.

Danny Abramowicz - Well, this is easy. By far the most notable and accomplished of all the players selected in this round. And one of the all-time greatest Saints. After his final season with the Saints in 1973 he was the team's all-time leading receiving in every major category (and most of the minor ones too). In 1969 Abramowicz was the team's first player ever to be named All Pro as a receiver. He remains to this day the only Saints player who has been selected All Pro as a receiver. Well, you know, other than that one guy who allegedly played TE.

James Ferguson - Played one season with the Saints and only two in the NFL catching on with the Falcons and Bears in his final season. Not sure if he ever hooked up with Ann Coulter.

Doug Wyatt - Played 3 seasons for the Saints grabbing 8 interceptions including a 55 yard return for a TD in the Saints first ever victory against the Green Bay Packers. He also returned a fumble 35 yards for a TD in a loss to the Kansas Chiefs and future Saints coach Hank Stram. Claims he might have had an interest in Ann Coulter at one time but the Adam's apple just threw him off a bit. NTTAWWT.

Greg Westbrooks - Played 3 seasons for the Saints with 1 interception and 2 fumble recoveries. Played a total of 7 seasons in the league including stints with the Cardinals, Rams, and Raiders. Denies that the woman he was seen with entering the Sugar Bowl Courts on Airline Hwy numerous times was Ann Coulter. And doesn't understand why folks keep bringing up the Adam's apple.

There you have it folks. Round 17. I'm sure you're overwhelmed and it'll be a tough choice.
