What if Drew Brees Never Signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2006?

New, comments

The Los Angeles Saints led by Vince Young and Ronnie Brown never played the Wildcat. Wait, what?

We are coming up on the 10-year anniversary of arguably the greatest free agent signing in NFL history: Drew Brees signing with the New Orleans Saints in March of 2006.

NFL.com's Dave Demechek has a video series entitled the "N 'if' L," where he extrapolates "what if" scenarios to see what could have played out in the NFL if one simple decision turned out another way. In honor of Drew's 10 year career in New Orleans, check out the video here.

If you are unable to watch the video (or just prefer to read a recap instead), here are the highlights:

With Drew Brees signing with the Miami Dolphins (the other team interested in his services), the Saints are forced to pass on USC's Reggie Bush with the #2 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, and instead pick Texas QB Vince Young. With the St. Louis Rams yet to move to the City of Angels, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the failed support behind the Black and Gold, the Saints move to Los Angeles. Drew makes the Dolphins contenders with their mediocre receiving corps, but Nick Saban still picks up his toys and goes home to Alabama.
