Myles Jack, LB, UCLA
Would you have believed that 3 years after hiring Gus Bradley, his team's defense would be holding back the offense? Hard to fathom, right? Yet, here we are. Heading into a 2016 season that Jaguars fans can be cautiously optimistic about.
The offense may not challenge the Greatest Show on Turf or the Pats of Moss and Brady for modern day offensive juggernauts, but it can at least be relied upon to put up some points this year. While there are needs along the offensive line and another sure handed wide-out would be appreciated...there are no players deserving of the #5 pick available in those positions. So it makes it that much easier for the Jacksonville war room to concentrate on their train wreck of a defense.
With Ramsey off the board and no trade suitors lining up it will come down to Bosa or Jack. Bosa being available still is a bit of surprise and will cause a furious debate between Gus Bradley and GM David Caldwell. Something I've taken the liberty to act out for all of you:
Gus Bradley: Wow, Cowboys went with Buckner...I know we were all about the Jack train, but Bosa is still there.
David Caldwell: Hmmm...what are you thinking, Gus?
GB: Well, Jack is an athletic specimen...the speed and cover skills to play the nickel back and the aggressiveness and block-shedding ability of a linebacker. Not just one LB position, but any of them. Having that kind of versatility to team up with Telvin Smith makes my pants tight.
DC: Awkward...but what about Bosa?
GB: *Crosses legs* Well he's a monster. Should be a solid pass rusher and with the right guidance he'll become elite against the run. He sets the edge consistently and has the hand skills and athleticism to beat the man across from him. He'll even make plays through the double team and will wreck any QB that doesn't get rid of the ball before Bosa gets to him.
DC: Agreed. Then it comes down to winning now...you know your job is on the line, right?
GB: I assumed.
DC: So what are you leaning towards?
GB: Well Jack is healing well according to the reports I've read and has the potential to be a gamechanger, but it's still a major knee injury that cost him all but 3 games last year.
DC: True.
GB: And since his speed and cover skills are his biggest asset it does concern me.
DC: Me as well.
GB: Plus, he may not even be ready for camp...and my God if he misses games because of the injury.
DC: Another Fowler?
GB: No way to know...
DC: ...
GB: ...
DC: We're drafting Jack anyway, huh?
GB: I called it in when I crossed my legs...
Yea, Bosa is the safer pick...but even with the Jaguars fear of losing it's 1st round pick 2 years in a row...Myles Jack is just too good for them to pass up. He's the best cover linebacker to enter the draft in the 21st century!!! (I know that's only 15 years, but it sounds much more bad ass to say it like that.) I've read multiple reports that say he could be the best player in the entire draft. Not just the best linebacker. If his knee gets right quickly he could have a major effect on the Jaguars 2016 campaign. With Fowler coming back and the FA additions this team has made already, this could be a very quick turnaround into a top ten defensive unit.
And in the lousy AFC South, it could be the Jaguars getting to the playoffs with Myles Jack's versatility leading the way.
Now someone go triple check his knee please...
