New Orleans police have booked 28-year-old Cardell Hayes with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of former Saints player Will Smith at 11:30pm Saturday night. Hayes is currently being held in court for a hearing. The weapon used in the shooting has also been recovered.
Hayes got into an argument with Smith after his Hummer H2 rear-ended Will Smith's Mercedes Benz SUV in the Lower Garden District, then allegedly shot Smith multiple times and Smith's wife, Racquel, twice in the right leg following the altercation. Hayes stayed at the crime scene following the shooting and waited for police to arrive.
This shooting marks the 111th in New Orleans in 2016, which is 21 more than there were at this point in 2015.
This isn't Hayes' first encounter with the law. In 2014, he plead guilty to illegal possession of a weapon and drug paraphernalia.
