Does the preseason really matter? Once you take a look at some of these stats, it may make you wonder.

It’s about as a real as it gets on Thursday, as the New Orleans Saints gear up for their first preseason action of 2016.

Here’s a brief overview of how the Saints have fared in preseason in the Sean Payton era.

2015: 0-4 (Loss - Loss - Loss - Loss)

2014: 3-1 (Win - Win - Win - Loss)

2013: 3-1 (Win - Win - Win - Loss)

2012: 2-3 (Win - Loss - Loss - Win - Loss)

2011: 2-2 (Win - Loss - Win - Loss)

2010: 2-2 (Loss - Win - Win - Loss)

2009: 3-1 (Win - Win - Win - Loss)

2008: 2-2 (Win - Loss - Win - Loss)

2007: 3-2 (Loss - Loss - Win - Win - Win)

2006: 1-3 (Win - Loss - Loss- Loss)

The first preseason game is very simplistic football, so do you read much into it? I’d say yes, because last year lacked so many fundamentals in tackling and getting the right personnel on the field. Let’s not forget that there’s plenty of players that we’re keeping a close watch on.

If you want to get technical, winning seasons for the Saints have had an 11-9 combined record in preseason as opposed to a 10-12 record in losing seasons.

Going a step further, the Saints have the following split records in preseason by game.

Hall of Fame game: 1-1

First preseason game: 7-3

Second preseason game: 4-6

Third preseason game: 7-3

Fourth preseason game: 2-8

Fifth preseason game: 1-1
