According to The Times-Picayune’s Josh Katzenstein, the New Orleans Saints are expected to release veteran backup quarterback Luke McCown on Wednesday.

The news hardly comes as a shock to some after the Saints re-signed Chase Daniel just a week ago. One would have figured that Daniel would have competed with McCown for the primary backup spot to Drew Brees, but it appears that Daniel won that job easily. Daniel obviously has familiarity with the Saints after spending three seasons with the team from 2010-2012, and his one-year deal comes with a $900K fully guaranteed base with an incentive potential up to $3 million.

McCown, who will turn 36 in July, was set for a base salary of $1.5 million in 2017, but will part with a $250K signing bonus. Perhaps there’s still an outside shot for Garrett Grayson, but it’s entirely way too early to speculate on that. Naturally, the draft could tell us a lot more on the future of the Saints quarterback situation.
