The New Orleans Saints will be opening up 2017 without center Max Unger, according to a Monday morning report by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Just reported on @gmfb: #Saints star C Max Unger has suffered a foot injury and is expected to miss the start of the 2017 season, source say
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) May 8, 2017
Unger has been a tremendous addition since being traded by the Seattle Seahawks as part of the Jimmy Graham deal, playing in 31 of 32 games for the Saints. Rapoport noted that Unger would likely start the season on PUP, which would force him to miss at least the first six weeks of the season. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see what the team says on it, as the extent of the injury is unknown.
The Saints have Senio Kelemete and Jack Allen as potential options for Unger, but someone to keep an eye on would be former Jets center Nick Mangold, who has garnered interest from several teams. Arguably, he’d be the most ready option to help pick up for Unger in the Saints offense. The team also picked up Cameron Tom, an undrafted rookie free agent from Southern Miss.
