The New Orleans Saints are only 58 days away from the official start of their 51st NFL season. To commemorate, Canal Street Chronicles continues our countdown to kickoff, by looking back at some of the Saints players that have worn the No. 58 in their careers.

Joe Federspiel (LB, 1972-1980)

Federspiel joined the Saints as a 4th round selection from Kentucky in the 1972 draft. By the end of his first season, he had worked his way into the starting role at middle linebacker. He would not miss another start until 1980, his final year as a Saint. In an era when icons like Jack Lambert, Randy Gradishar, Willie Lanier, Ted Hendricks, and Nick Buoniconti manned the middle for winning teams, Federspiel was as highly regarded as any, despite the fact that the Saints never finished with a winning record.

His 5 fumble recoveries in 1975 led the league, and he had 10 for his career to go along with 5 interceptions. Neither sacks or tackles were an officially recorded statistic during his time in the league, but Federspiel was respected throughout for his tackling abilities. Joe Federspiel was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 1993, and remains one of the franchise's most underrated players.

Scott Shanle (LB, 2006-2012)

New Orleans obtained Shanle in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys during training camp of 2006, in exchange for only a 7th round draft pick. He became an immediate starter, and would go on to start 90 of the Saints 96 games between 2006-11, getting voted the Saints defensive MVP in 2008. He was consistently among the team's top tacklers, and showed his versatility by contributing 3 interceptions, 7.5 sacks, and forcing or recovering 10 fumbles over his New Orleans career. He saved his best football for the team's biggest moments, as Shanle was the Saints top tackler during the Saints' 2009 Super Bowl championship run.

Obum Gwacham (DE/LB, 2015-current)

Gwacham enters his third season wearing No. 58 for the Saints. He showed some nice potential in 2015, contributing 2.5 sacks in just nine games, while showing good burst around the outside edge. Last season he seemed to regress, then an injury sustained early ended his season. Gwacham is among a handful of young edge rushers on the roster bubble, competing for just a few spots at that position entering training camp this summer.

Other Saints players that have worn the No. 58: Eli Strand (1967), Glen Redd (1981-86), Scott Leach (1987), Darion Conner (1994), Brian Jones (1995-98), Phillip Ward (2000), Jonathan Jackson (2001), J.R. Johnson (2002), Cie Grant (2003), Kyle Knox (2013-14).
