According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the New Orleans Saints are placing veteran linebacker Dannell Ellerbe (foot) on injured reserve. Multiple other members of the local media have since confirmed the news. Rapoport stated that the team will release him when he becomes healthy, but the claim of him being a hot free agent may be a bit far-fetched.
#Saints are placing LB Dannell Ellerbe on Injured Reseved, source said. He has a foot injury. He'll be waived when healthy... & be a hot FA— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) July 25, 2017
It was revealed on Monday afternoon that Ellerbe was to start training camp on the PUP list. It was just the latest setback in a long line of injuries for the 31-year-old veteran. Ellerbe hasn’t played in a full season throughout his entire 8-year career, and it doesn’t appear that he will ever get there. After being acquired from the Dolphins, Ellerbe has appeared in less than half of the games for the Saints (15-of-32). There’s no doubting that he’s been a factor on the field when he’s been able to suit up, but it would appear that the time is up for Ellerbe, and Mike Nolan will have other linebacker options that could emerge as a potential replacement.
