It’s a surprise when a 6th round draft pick outplays a 3rd round pick at the same position. It’s even more of a surprise when a rookie pass rusher shows more than just one or two moves out of the 6th round.
Al-Quadin Muhammad has been an extremely pleasant surprise throughout training camp and the preseason. While it must be noted most of his snaps have come against the back half of the 90 man rosters in the NFL’s “meaningless games” there is a lot to be said for consistently sacking the quarterback in every game and showing pressure from a variety of moves.
When the Saints brought in Defensive Line Coach Ryan Nielsen to help bring in a paradigm shift they helped his cause by infusing the line with talent. In the past two seasons they team has brought in Alex Okafor, Sheldon Rankins, Trey Hendrickson, Al-Quadin Muhammad and Nick Fairley.
In the following film we focus on Muhammad, and how he has produced so far in the preseason. While he still has a ways to go to be a true three down linemen there is a lot of positives we can see in this young man.
