Sportsfacts.org just released their “Top Three Things Every NFL Team’s Fans Are Worried About the Most” (wordy, I know) list. For the New Orleans Saints, none come as a big surprise:
- Squandering another year of one of the best QBs to ever play the game in Drew Brees;
- Poor use of salary cap funds; and
- One of the worst defenses in the NFL for what seems like forever.
Similar to the Green Bay Packers, a lot of Saints fans feel they’re watching greatness wasted with Drew Brees only having one ring despite being one of the most prolific QBs in the NFL. The Saints also seem to struggle with salary cap management, keeping them from being able to acquire more talent.
It’s funny: Drew Brees, he of the QB “greatness” from point number one is also partly the issue regarding the Saints’ salary cap issues from point number two, and while they rarely knock free agent signings out of the park (C.J. Spiller, Jairus Byrd, etc), limited cap funds also limit the number of signings a team is able to make to address the holes on defense.
In any event, optimism is still high, even after the news of the suspension to Saints WR Willie Snead. With a defense that looked vastly improved during the preseason, Saints fans are cautiously hopeful that the team can at least have a Top 15 defense. And with what could turn into one of the better drafts in recent memory last year, the Saints might have a solid, young, and cost-controlled core to build around for the future, erasing some of the burden placed on free agent acquisitions and salary cap constraints in the future.
