Panthers Fire Head Coach Ron Rivera

The Saints’ rivalry with “Riverboat Ron” is over

NFL: Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints Chuck Cook-USA TODAY Sports

According to the official site of the Carolina Panthers, head coach Ron Rivera was let go today after eight years in charge of the team.

Rivera took over in 2011 and guided Carolina to the Super Bowl in 2015 with Cam Newton as his quarterback. The Panthers were defeated 24-10 in that game by the Denver Broncos.

He was also the first head coach to lead an NFC South team to three consecutive titles, from 2013 to 2015, a feat later repeated by the Saints from 2017 to the current 2019 season.

During his tenure in Charlotte, Rivera was 8-10 against the Saints in both the regular and postseason, one of the NFC South coaches who had the most success against Sean Payton.

The Saints play the Panthers in Charlotte on December 29 to close the 2019 regular season.
