Expected to start the season on injured reserve, Sheldon Rankins seems to be ahead of schedule in recovering from his Achilles injury suffered last season in the Divisional Round against the Eagles.

NFL reporter Ian Rapoport broke the news on Monday evening that Rankins would be activated from the PUP list.

This does not necessarily mean that he will play Week 1 against the Houston Texans, but it is a sign that he will be ready to go before Week 8 as previously thought.

Rankins will now count as a roster spot on the 53-man roster once final cuts are completed, meaning there is one less spot for another player who’s on the bubble.

The Saints will already be without David Onyemata for game one as he serves his suspension, leaving Mario Edwards Jr. as the starter at the three-tech defensive tackle position. The team also acquired Malcom Brown during free agency.
