Sean Payton, Saints agree to 5-year contract extension

New, comments

The Glazer Bombs are always fun on Sunday mornings.

We can officially quiet any looming Sunday splash reports this season with the New Orleans Saints and coaching future. FOX’s Jay Glazer reported on Sunday morning with a #GlazerBomb that Sean Payton has been locked up to a 5-year contract extension. Glazer added that he loves the city, and the city loves him — in turn, he’ll be with the Saints through 2024.

This especially hurts Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, who constantly believed that Payton could be a target of the Dallas Cowboys most recently in January.

And given that a month of Sunday Splash! reports has speculated on Saints coach Sean Payton moving on and, more specifically, linked him to the Cowboys, it’s fair to consider Jones’ comments through that lens. Is Jones suggesting that, if the Saints lose, the Cowboys would explore upgrading from Jason Garrett to Sean Payton?

Coming into the 2019 season, Payton posted a 126-80 record, which was good for a .612 win percentage. He’s the franchise’s top head coach in wins and winning percentage. Only Bill Belichick has been tenured longer, since 2000 to be exact. Payton needs just one victory to tie Mike Ditka for 30th all-time in victories.
