The New Orleans Saints hosted the injury-plagued San Francisco 49ers in Week 10. New Orleans started off rather slow and found themselves down 10-0 early in the second quarter. The Saints rallied to score 27 unanswered points and finished with a 27-13 victory.
Perhaps the biggest story of the game was quarterback Drew Brees’ injury. He fractured multiple ribs on both sides and suffered a collapsed lung after taking a huge sack and landing on his side.
The injury will sideline Brees for at least two weeks. Jameis Winston, who New Orleans signed to a 1-year, $1.1 million deal in April, takes the helm under center for the foreseeable future.
Wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith will also likely miss time as he goes through concussion protocol after a helmet-to-helmet hit in the first half. Undrafted rookie receiver Marquez Callaway is expected to step up in Smith’s place should he miss Week 11.
Callaway saw six offensive snaps but made huge plays on special teams by recovering two muffed San Francisco punts.
24th overall pick Cesar Ruiz played all 59 offensive snaps but struggled on the interior. Ruiz and the offensive line gave up three sacks including the sack that knocked Brees out of the game.
Undrafted defensive tackle Malcolm Roach was on the field for 44 percent of the defense’s snaps. Third-round linebacker Zack Baun played a single snap on defense but saw a healthy workload on special teams.
Third-round rookie tight end Adam Trautman played 27 snaps on offense but did not see a target after catching his first NFL touchdown last week against Tampa Bay.
The Saints will play in the Superdome again in Week 11 - this time against the Atlanta Falcons. New Orleans looks to take the first of two games against their division rivals and try to keep the NFC’s top seed.
