The New Orleans Saints have just signed former-Broncos starting quarterback Trevor Siemian to their active roster. The Saints signed Siemian from the Titans practice squad and will backup Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston.
Siemian had a 13-12 record as a starter with the Denver Broncos and has recently bounced around from the New York Jets to the Titans and now has landed a spot with New Orleans. With Saints quarterback Drew Brees placed on the injured reserve, the team wanted to ensure they employed three active quarterbacks as a contingency.
Hill has mainly been deployed in multiple roles, including special teams. Head coach Sean Payton has been cryptic on which quarterback will get the start on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, but the addition of another quarterback was expected.
Siemian will likely never see the field for the Saints, but he is an insurance policy in case both Hill and Winston are affected by injury. Furthermore, New Orleans will be making the trip to Denver next week to face off with the Broncos. Siemian brings some insider knowledge into the opposing offense, so this could potentially be a chess move by Payton in preparation for the matchup. In any case, the Saints now have three able-bodied quarterbacks on the active roster.
