Saints to be officially punished for mask-less post-game celebration

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at New Orleans Saints Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints have officially been penalized for their post-game locker room celebration that went viral after their 38-3 decimation of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Saints are reportedly docked a 7th-round draft pick and have been fined $500,000.00 as an organization.

This is the second $500,000 fine for the Saints related to Covid protocols, as Sean Payton and the Saints were fined a similar amount after a Week 2 loss to the Los Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football when the coaches for both teams, Payton and Jon Gruden, were shown multiple times not wearing masks correctly. The Saints are have reportedly been docked the 7th-round pick because of a “repeat offender” label.

As the Saints prepare for a game against the Denver Broncos later this afternoon where the Broncos are expected to not have any of their three quarterbacks available for the game due to not following Covid protocols, it is difficult for Saints fans to complain much about a fine and a 7th-round pick. However, where Saints fans have a valid grievance is with the continued lack of consistency shown by the League in handing out punishments as numerous teams were guilty of similar post-game celebrations without issue or comment from the NFL.

Sean Payton is likely none too thrilled with this result, and we’ve seen in the past just how petty he can be - it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see Sean and the New Orleans offense take out their frustrations against a battered Denver team later today.
