With a surprising amount of talent that fell to the New Orleans Saints at the 24th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Saints selected center Cesar Ruiz. This pick allows New Orleans to solidify their interior offensive line, and could mean a move to guard for current center Erik McCoy. Ruiz also helps answer questions that have surrounded Larry Warford in recent months, and who is scheduled to be a free agent after the 2020 season. He was the best player available for what the Saints felt they needed to improve.
Offensive line has been listed as a need for the Saints heading into the draft. With such a deep wide receiver class in this draft New Orleans felt that they could wait to add to the wideout corps.
Ruiz started three seasons at Michigan and is billed at being an athletic center who excels at pass protection but will need time to develop as a run blocker. New Orleans shocked fans by not taking a linebacker such as Patrick Queen, but the team still met needs and got a great center and future mainstay in the offensive line in Ruiz.
New Orleans has helped their case in bolstering their roster for another Super Bowl run for quarterback Drew Brees, but are also kept their eyes on the future in one of the most important positions in the entire sport.
