With the 2020 NFL Draft behind us, we here at Canal Street Chronicles thought it could be a good time to take our first crack at predicting the New Orleans Saints 53-man roster for the 2020 season. This prediction is based off the factors known now, and will undoubtedly change when training camp presumably commences this summer.

There will be a few names from last season that won’t make this initial cut. Additionally, some surprising names will make the roster that you may not agree with, but we will explain our reasoning. Alright, let’s kick it off!

Quarterbacks (4)

  • Drew Brees
  • Taysom Hill
  • Jameis Winston
  • Tommy Stevens

The first three are an absolute no-brainer and require little explanation. The possible surprise here is that I chose to include Stevens. When the Saints expended future draft capital to move up and snag Stevens in the seventh-round of the draft, it was because they knew a rival NFC South team was already set to sign him to an undrafted free agent deal. If Stevens doesn’t make the Saints 53-man roster and instead ends up on the practice squad, it would seem likely that the same NFC South rival would sign him to their 53-man roster. Therefore, New Orleans will initially roll with four quarterbacks.

Wide Receivers (5)

  • Michael Thomas
  • Emmanuel Sanders
  • Tre’Quan Smith
  • Deonte Harris
  • Emmanuel Butler

Perhaps the only real “surprise” here would be including Butler while also leaving out guys like Juwan Johnson and Maurice Harris. Unlike last season, Brees and the Saints offense will have a one-two punch in the form of Thomas and Sanders. Furthermore, Smith will be expected to finally produce to the level that has been set forth for him in recent seasons.

Running Backs (4)

  • Alvin Kamara
  • Latavius Murray
  • Dwayne Washington
  • Michael Burton (fullback)

No surprises here. After Zach Line retired at the end of the 2019 season, Burton was brought in to fill the fullback position.

Tight End (3)

  • Jared Cook
  • Josh Hill
  • Adam Trautman

Despite New Orleans utilizing just two tight ends in the 2019 season, Trautman is a near lock to make the roster. His athleticism and versatility invoke the spirit of former-Saint Jimmy Graham. While Trautman may not see a ton of starting time, he could fill a depth role.

Offensive Line (9)

  • Terron Armstead
  • Ryan Ramczyk
  • Andrus Peat
  • Erik McCoy
  • Cesar Ruiz
  • Nick Easton
  • Cameron Tom
  • Calvin Throckmorton
  • Derrick Kelly

Most of these require no explanation. The deliberate exclusion of Larry Warford is due to the fact that he will likely be traded or cut before the season starts. If removed, his $13 million dollar cap hit can help the team make additional acquisitions and extensions. Throckmorton is an UDFA, but was offered a significant amount of money to join the Saints. His addition to the 53-man roster seems likely. Finally, Kelly’s familiarity with the Saints’ system should work in his favor in making the cut.

Specialists (3)

  • Wil Lutz
  • Thomas Morstead
  • Zach Wood

No surprises here. This was the easiest group to predict by far.

Linebackers (6)

  • Demario Davis
  • Alex Anzalone
  • Kiko Alonso
  • Zack Baun
  • Kaden Elliss
  • Craig Robertson

Again no surprises here. The only surprise would be if Alonso or Anzalone don’t make the roster due to injury, which seems unlikely at this point. Elliss is a phenomenal breakout candidate in 2020 and will be one player to keep an eye on.

Defensive Backs (10)

  • Marshon Lattimore
  • Janoris Jenkins
  • P.J. Williams
  • Patrick Robinson
  • Deatrick Nichols
  • Marcus Williams
  • Malcolm Jenkins
  • C.J. Gardner-Johnson
  • J.T. Gray
  • Saquan Hampton

Plenty of options here for New Orleans and thus some talented players were left off the list. Despite Justin Hardee coming back this offseason, he won’t make the final roster cut in this first prediction. Others such as D.J. Swearinger won’t be able to beat out newcomers like former-XFL corner Nichols.

Defensive Line (9)

  • Cameron Jordan
  • Marcus Davenport
  • Trey Hendrickson
  • Mario Edwards
  • Malcolm Brown
  • Shy Tuttle
  • David Onyemata
  • Sheldon Rankins
  • Taylor Stallworth

I don’t think Carl Granderson is going to be able to crack the 53-man roster this year. There is more talent along the defensive line this season than there has been in quite a while. I really like Stallworth making the team after spending all of last year excelling on the practice squad. That experience will help him beat out guys like Malcolm Roach.
