New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees fought through 11 rib fractures and a collapsed lung following the Week 10 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers. He would go on to miss the next four games, but made a remarkably quick return in order to help lead his team to the playoffs and a hopeful Super Bowl run.

However, even before that game Brees looked uncomfortable going through warmups constantly shaking his shoulder out. Brees is well known for being a compulsive creature of habit. His preparation going into each game is the same, his warmup is the same, his mindset is the same. Therefore, when something looks out of the ordinary in any portion of the preparation, it likely means something is out of the ordinary.

After the Saints season ended plenty of questions arose not just about Brees’s future in football, but also about his sharp decline in performance of play over the course of the 2020 season. Now, some of those questions can be answered in part due to an Instagram post by Drew’s wife Brittany Brees. Brittany said that Drew dealt with far more than just broken ribs and a collapsed lung. The future Hall of Fame quarterback also dealt with a torn rotator cuff and a torn fascia in his foot. Both of those injuries would put most quarterbacks out of commission for a significant amount of time, let alone the additional rib and lung injury.

His decline in performance makes sense. But one thing is for certain: he is a warrior who battled through it all for his team and for his city.
