Saints 2020 Year In Review: Keith Washington

From nearly cut, to 2021 camp invite.

NCAA Football: Texas at West Virginia Ben Queen-USA TODAY Sports

New Orleans Saints cornerback Keith Washington was signed as an undrafted rookie ahead of the 2020 season. During his time at West Virginia, he totaled six interceptions and 17 pass breakups while adding on 63 total tackles and one and a half sacks.

At 6’1” and 180 pounds, the 24-year-old from Prattville, Alabama has good size and great speed. He was impressive in camp, showing up when it really counted for his future.

There always comes a point in training camp where teams will rotate the roster and bring in more talent. Right around that time, Washington walked into practice and made himself indispensable. Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football credited him with six interceptions throughout camp. After that showing, the team kept Washington around.

Thanks to the amount of reliable secondary play New Orleans fielded in 2020, Washington didn’t get his chance under the lights. He remained on the practice squad all season and did not get an opportunity to be called up for a game. He did also spend some time on the COVID-19/Reserve list.

Even though he didn’t get on the field, he must have continued to do enough with his work on the practice squad as he became one of 15 New Orleans Saints to be signed to a Future/Reserve deal in January. That deal guarantees him a spot on the Saints’ 2021 training camp roster. He’ll be one of the 90 players that report following free agency and the draft with a shot to earn his way back to the practice squad or up to the active roster.

I know I personally am looking forward to seeing Washington back at camp in the offseason and hope he can put on another show like he did last year. If so, it’ll be hard to keep him off the field for a second year.
