Super Bowl LV Pick: The Return of the King

The NFL’s premier event is finally upon us, Super Bowl LV, and the champion of the 2020 season will be crowned this Sunday night.  Let’s break down who the Super Bowl champion will be.

Here we go folks, that bittersweet time for every football fan. As much as Super Bowl Sunday is a celebration of the NFL’s championship, it’s also the culmination of another football season. Come Monday, it’s all over for actual NFL football for another eight months until it all starts over again. Eight long months. So before we talk draft and free agency for the New Orleans Saints, lets break down this final game of the season.

The NFC Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers face the AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs in the biggest spectacle in American professional sports. Kansas City, the reigning Super Bowl Champion, enters the game with a 14-2 record and they field the NFL’s top-ranked offense, while Tampa Bay enters the game with a 11-5 record and field the NFL’s seventh-ranked offense. It’s a battle of the top two passing offenses in the NFL, so expect to see an aerial show in Tampa. Let’s now take a look at Super Bowl LV.

I told you so: Chiefs over Bills!

What do I know: Packers over Bucs?

“Patrick Mahomes may be great, but now he faces the greatest of all time”

The Kansas City Chiefs are the reigning Super Bowl Champions. They are the best team in the NFL. They have the most dangerous offense in the NFL. They are led by the most dynamic quarterback in the entire league. Despite all this, they are not the story of this game. That accolade goes to the “ageless wonder”, the “consulate champion”, the “GOAT”, Tom Brady.

Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes understandably grabs all of the headlines, but they are not the entire story. Watching Tampa defensive coordinator Todd Bowles attempt to contend with the lethal combination of the genius offensive minds of Eric Bieniemy and Andy Reid will be intriguing, as will KC’s defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo once again facing Tom Brady in the Super Bowl. The last time Spags had to prepare for Brady in the big game, his defense stifled Brady and the undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII thanks to a relentless pass rush. Expect a similar attack with relentless pressure from the interior, in order to rattle Brady who has struggled most with consistent interior pressure.

Tampa is using every trick in the book and every superstitious advantage at their disposal. They are the first team in NFL history to play in the Super Bowl in their home stadium, an advantage diminished by COVID, but they still look to take advantage of trends that have benefitted the team in white jerseys. Despite playing in their home stadium and being the designated home team, Tampa Bay has elected to wear their white road jerseys in Super Bowl LV. The team wearing white (Tampa Bay) has won 13 of the last 16 Super Bowls, the three exceptions being Green Bay (XLV), Philadelphia (LII), and Kansas City (LIV) just a year ago.

Unsurprisingly, expect the three most-talented stars on the field to be the biggest factors in this game. Those being Kansas City’s QB Patrick Mahomes, WR Tyreek Hill, and TE Travis Kelce. Simply put, Tampa’s defense will have no answers for Kansas City’s “big three” on offense. Mahomes has proven no defect is too large and no challenge to great to overcome. On the other side, Brady can boast the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history, but Kansas City proves a far more deadly, formidable, and clutch opponent than Atlanta was. This game feels like one that will end with a score much closer than it ever truly feels like the game really was.

With six Super Bowl Rings and now going for a seventh, Tom Brady is considered to be the Greatest of All-Time among NFL players, and most would consider him the king of quarterbacks, but Patrick Mahomes has already been fitted for his crown, and this game serves as the ceremony to prove Mahomes as the one true king of NFL quarterbacks. Mahomes, who added the brightest jewel to his crown last February, now looks to add another, as he returns to the Super Bowl the reigning champion and reigning king.

With this win, Kansas City will be come the first repeat Super Bowl Champion since, ironically enough, Tom Brady and New England in 2004, where they defeated, equally ironically, Andy Reid in another Florida-based Super Bowl. This will be another jewel in the crown for Mahomes and the faithful fans in Kansas City. Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs will leave Tampa with the Lombardi Trophy, again.
