With quarterback Drew Brees expected to announce his retirement any day now, it isn’t a surprise to see mock drafts start to predict the Saints grab a potential quarterback of the future with the 28th selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.
And that’s exactly what CBS Sports did in a recent mock draft, predicting Alabama quarterback Mac Jones to hear his name when the Saints are on the clock:
New Orleans is the perfect situation for Mac Jones. If he were put in a situation behind a porous offensive line that required him to use his feet to survive, the Alabama product would fail spectacularly. He is accurate, poised and throws the prettiest deep balls this side of the Mississippi River.
This isn’t an absurd idea as Mac Jones himself listed the Saints as one of the teams he met with during the Senior Bowl, and the Saints have a clear history of drafting players from the Senior Bowl.
Alabama QB Mac Jones spoke highly from his meeting with the #Saints at this year’s Senior Bowl. Said he hopes he impressed them and proved he’s a smart QB.

Could the Saints draft Drew Brees’s future replacement with the 28th pick? Maybe.
The selection of Mac Jones wouldn’t be terrible. CBS has him listed as the 25th best overall prospect on their big board, so selecting him 28th overall provides at least a little value. For those interested, Florida quarterback Kyle Trask was still available with the 28th pick, so it would be interesting to see who actually comes off the board first between Trask and Jones, whether to the Saints or somewhere else.
