2021 NFL Mock Draft: Saints use all six of their picks.

Hallelujah, the Saints were awarded all three of their possible compensatory. This week, let’s look at a potential draft where the Saints make no moves and use all six.

1.28 CB Greg Newsome II, Northwestern

This is a name that you don’t always hear go in the first in mocks, but you will hear in the first come the NFL draft. Greg Newsome II is a SPEED DEMON. He ran a 4.31 40 at his pro day, and while numbers are high this year, you can tell that this is a legit high 4.3 40 yard dash. Newsome doesn’t sacrifce physicality with speed. He can and will tackle receivers or in defending the run. Don’t let his low interception numbers scare you, he plays the ball plenty well. With the loss of Janoris Jenkins, corner is an immediate need. Grabbing Newsome or another top corner in the first could provide a Day 1 starter across from Marshon Lattimore. I think Newsome combined with Lattimore and Marcus Williams running deep safety would be absolutely lethal in the deep game, without sacrificing much in the run game.

2.60 WR Dyami Brown, North Carolina

Speaking of speed, UNC wideout Dyami Brown has plenty of it. However, I do not believe that it is all that he has to offer. I think that he has elite ball tracking and in-air adjustments. He comes down with contested catches and a good rate, not his best trait yet. He is not asked to run very many routes, but did not have any issues creating seperation at the top of his routes. I think he has a lot of good traits and could immediately contribute with Michael Thomas and Marquez Callaway.

3.98 DL Tyler Shelvin, LSU

While we know the Saints don’t draft a ton of LSU players, getting a 1-Tech with the talent of Tyler Shelvin would be an absolute steal. He would be an immediate threat in run defense, helping out with a potential and likely loss of Sheldon Rankins. He has an elite bull rush. He is a powerful threat in the middle of the defensive line. We probably wouldn’t get much out of him in the pass rush, but he would excel in the role we could give him. The Saints frequently sub out DL talent, so it would not be a problem for this defense to account for his inefficiencies.

3.105 OL James Hudson, Cincinnati

Now, addressing the OTHER line. James Hudson is an incredibly interesting prospect. He has the tools to play pretty much anywhere on the line with the right teachers. Good size, good power, good athleticism. He seems like a very Saints offensive line prospect. He’s played a lot of experience at tackle, but at the Senior Bowl I saw him excel at guard as well. Really just a blank slate to make a star wherever you need him. With uncertainty at tackle and at left guard, he would be a great pickup in the third.

4.133 DL Cam Sample, Tulane

Speaking of the Senior Bowl, Cam Sample was one of the best performers throughout the week. He played everywhere on the line, and shined. He is incredibly powerful and can use that against anyone he lines up across from. Excellent use of his hands. He would be a great rotational piece for a while with the potential to grow into more. I think he fits well with the Saints defense, and already has a passion for New Orleans after 4 years in the city.

6.216 OL Alaric Jackson, Iowa

Alaric Jackson is another piece on the OL that would be great depth, with the ability to develop into a more later on. He is a jack of all trades, master of none. This is a similar pick to James Hudson, but the Saints will be looking for cheap OL depth, and this would not be a terrible option for a couple of years. Alaric Jackson is also a vegan offensive lineman so he’s automatically a very interesting person. I think he would benefit greatly from Zach Strief joining the staff. He is also another person who could switch to the inside if need be.
