The New Orleans Saints have drafted a quarterback, but not one many of us expected. Ian Book, the winningest QB in the long and storied history of Notre Dame football, was one of the more underrated quarterbacks in college football over the last two years.

Book had a TD-INT ratio of 34-6 in 2019, and 15-3 in 2020, and ratings of over 140 each of the last three years. With Jameis Winston still on a one year deal, and Taysom Hill not getting any younger, Book could be a part of the Saints offense as soon as next year.

The pick does come as a surprise, as many felt the Saints would fill some of their holes and try and get a starter at this point in the draft, but if Sean Payton is sold on Book, who are we to argue? Book is a pocket passer but has very good quickness and elusiveness in the pocket at just 6’0”. His accuracy and decision-making are among some of his issues, but a year sitting and learning from Sean Payton could iron out some of the issues he had in college.

This pick is likely to divide the fanbase, as Book could wind up being a starter as soon as next year, or could not even make the 53-man roster come Week 1. It was also not an immediate need, as the Saints already have two QBs who know the offense and have tenure and success in the NFL. This will be a pick that we will be talking about for a while.
