The New Orleans Saints have selected Ian Book in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Book played quarterback for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He leaves the Irish with the most wins in Notre Dame history. A great feat for a team that has been playing collegiate football since 1887. Book will go to the Saints with a crowded quarterback room and look to develop under Sean Payton.

Saints select Ian Book in the fourth round

The selection of Ian Book is likely to spark interesting conversation for a team with many holes left to fill. The Saints still had needs at positions like wide receiver and defensive tackle when they selected Book. Book finds himself in a great situation for his career prospects. Others are likely to lose out due to the Book selection though. Here are the winners and losers of the Saints selection of Ian Book.

Winners of the Ian Book selection

Ian Book is the biggest winner of his selection. Not simply because he was drafted to play professional football but for who he is now being paired with. Sean Payton is an offensive mastermind and will do everything he can to coach up Book. Sitting behind Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill also helps Book. If there is any organization who can develop Book, it is the New Orleans Saints.

Losers of the Ian Book Selection

The biggest loser of the Ian Book selection is Trevor Siemian. Siemian was likely going to the Saints third quarterback so that both Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill could contribute to the offense. With Book on the roster now, Siemian could prove to be a casualty of roster cuts. Siemian has likely shown all that he can bring to an NFL team. Ian Book’s upside and development will keep him around for at least a few years to see if he can prove to be an NFL-caliber quarterback.

The Saints wide receiving group is another loser of this pick. In the fourth round, there were many capable receivers on the board for the New Orleans Saints. The Saints lost Emmanuel Sanders this off-season and have yet to replace him. This years NFL draft was incredibly deep at wide receiver so there were options available. The Saints decided to stay put with what they have and take what is likely a third string quarterback for the 2021 season.

Saints add another quarterback with selection of Ian Book

The selection of Ian Book will likely be incredibly polarizing around the New Orleans Saints fanbase. The selection adds another quarterback to a room with Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, and Trevor Siemian already. Book was praised for his winning and athleticism by many, including recently retired Drew Brees. The selection of Ian Book for a team with many other needs will cause some interesting discussions this off-season. It is tough to see many winners right now with this pick but Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis have earned the benefit of the doubt when selecting questionable players.
