Golden Tate is a savvy veteran who has had a ton of success in the NFL, especially against the New Orleans Saints. Tate was most recently with the New York Giants where he had 35 receptions for 388 yards and 2 touchdowns in 12 games. Tate could excel with an elite coach and system with the Saints. Whether Jameis Winston is the starter week one or not, New Orleans could use another receiver that can play in the slot or on the outside.

This offseason, the Saints haven't really addressed wide receiver beside selecting South Alabama WR Kawaan Baker in the 7th round. Head Coach Sean Payton said the Saints would start working with Baker as an outside receiver, but he can also work in the slot. A hole was opened when Emmanuel Sanders was released this offseason. The Saints could hope that spot is filled by some of their young guys like Marquez Callaway, Juwan Johnson, or Deonte Harris, but signing Tate could be a great insurance policy.
Tate didn’t have great numbers last season, but he was in an offense without Saquan Barkley, with a struggling Daniel Jones, and under first-year head coach Joe Judge. Sean Payton would be able to find packages to give Tate mismatches all over the field, and a West Coast offense with a new and improved Jameis Winston could give the Saints another great receiving option outside of Michael Thomas.
Lions WR Golden Tate's last 3 games vs. Saints:
— Chris Hagan (@ChrisHaganTV) December 4, 2016
2014: 10 rec, 154 yards, TD
2015: 6 rec, 45 yards, 2 TD
2016: 8 rec, 145 yards, TD
Entering an offense with elite levels of talent is the best way to optimize Tate’s talent. In Winston's first full year under center for the Saints, he is going to need all the help he can get. The Saints used to get away with not as much skill at the WR position because Drew Brees elevated everyone’s play. With a new QB you don't want to go in lacking experience.
The Saints wide receiver room consists of Michael Thomas, Tre’Quan Smith, Marquez Callaway, Deonte Harris, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Juwan Johnson, Kawaan Baker, and a couple others. That is 5 UDFA WRs with more on the way. The Saints receiver room needs another veteran presence and the Saint killer himself Golden Tate would be a great add post-draft.
