It finally seems that the Louisiana will be getting daily fantasy sports for the upcoming NFL season. After voting on the law in 2018, regulations have finally been put into place for gaming to begin later in 2021. This has been a long road led by Representative John Stefanski on the legislature side and the Fairness for Fantasy Sports Louisiana PAC. Daily fantasy gaming will be welcome to the parishes which passed the bill. If all goes well from here on, daily fantasy could be ready for the New Orleans Saints season opener in September.

Daily fantasy sports on its way to Louisiana

Most football fans have knowledge of seasonal fantasy football leagues. Work and friends leagues have been prevalent the past decade. Fantasy gaming has taken over broadcasts and stat trackers are common across almost every type of NFL coverage. Most media organizations have members dedicated to only covering fantasy sports. This enhancement to sports watching makes daily fantasy desirable for many fans.

Daily leagues take year-long commitments and condenses them to fit almost all fans. Sites and apps which offer this type of gaming allow users to pick the way they want to game. There are single-game fantasy leagues which normally consist of five players. There are also hour-long leagues which are full rosters and generally happen when multiple games happen on a single day. These types of options allow immediate gratification for winning. Losing does not linger as much as seasonal leagues as well since every weekend has multiple ways to play.

Thankfully, it seems as if Louisiana will have daily fantasy gaming for the upcoming NFL season. The Louisiana Gaming Control Board passed rules for the gaming earlier this year. The February meeting of the Control Board was used to adopt the rules for fantasy gaming. After the review period of these rules, companies were allowed to apply for gaming within the state. Two companies have applied to game in the 47 parishes which approved the legislation in 2018. FanDuel has claimed to be one of these companies. The other is likely either DraftKings or Yahoo Fantasy since they are the largest competitors for FanDuel.

The normal review process for the approval of these gaming companies is expected to last 60-90 days. If two companies applied in May, then approval can be expected in August at the latest. This will be just in time for the start of the NFL season slated to kick off September 9. This type of gaming will bring revenue into the state of Louisiana as well as entertainment. Being one of only seven states that did not allow daily fantasy sports in 2020 likely cost Louisiana tax revenue. It has been a long road since this legislature in 2018, but it finally appears as if Louisiana will have daily fantasy sports for the upcoming NFL season.
