The New Orleans Saints have multiple places on the roster where they could find ways to improve - wide receiver, defensive tackle, and others. Notably, Sean Payton has acknowledged the team is still looking at cornerback options, so it’s no surprise ESPN named “signing Richard Sherman” as the one move left for the Saints this offseason.
Sign cornerback Richard Sherman
Sherman’s name has been connected to the Saints this offseason, and I love the fit. I’m of the belief that Sherman would be a positive addition to any of the 32 NFL teams given his leadership, intensity on the field, understanding of how to help younger players and, of course, his on-field performance. The Saints could likely use a dash of depth in their secondary, and Kris Richard — a longtime Seahawks coach during Sherman’s time in Seattle — is now coaching the Saints’ defensive backs.
Former Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick has visited the Saints, as the Saints still have a need for a veteran corner on the roster opposite the recently-restructured Marshon Lattimore. Despite drafting Paulson Adebo in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Saints could use a veteran like Kirkpatrick to allow Adebo time to get his NFL legs under him.
Whether Kirkpatrick or Richard Sherman, who the Saints have also expressed interest in, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Saints add some help in the secondary. Whether because Adebo will need time to learn, or the Saints want to keep Patrick Robinson in just a reserve role, or in case Marshon Lattimore is suspended to start the season, the Saints should look to add a veteran cornerback to their roster on a reasonable deal.
