Saints set to add pair of cornerbacks to the defense

While neither are likely game-changers, as the least the Saints are trying to address the defense.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton recently re-emphasized that the cornerback position - especially outside cornerback - was still a position of need for this Saints team. Now, after adding cornerback Brian Poole to add depth at the slot cornerback position, the Saints are finally adding players who can help on the outside.

Amukamara is obviously the biggest name between the two signings, winning a Super Bowl for the New York Giants during his rookie season. Amukamara has bounced around a bit in the league since, and spent the entirety of the 2020 season on the Arizona Cardinals practice squad. At 31-years-old and having not played an NFL snap since the 2019 season, it’s hard to imagine Amukamara coming in and immediately contributing. If he ends up winning a starting job out of camp, I think it might say more about the likes of Paulson Adebo, Patrick Robinson, Ken Crawley, and the like.

If you want someone younger than Amukamara, then maybe KeiVarae Russell strikes your interest. Russell turns 28 in October, but he’s appeared in only three NFL games in the past two seasons himself.

Both should be considered fringe players to make the final Saints roster, but it’s never a bad thing to have players with NFL experience competing at positions at need.
