Jameis Winston’s preseason game two performance wasn’t just impressive because of his 9/10, 123 yard, and two touchdown stat line. He was poised, in command, and made the right decisions. He was a leader. And while the Jacksonville Jaguars are certainly not the paradigm of success in the NFL, there were elements of Winston’s game observable regardless of opponent that showed that he was ready to step into a premier opportunity.
As of this morning, several NFL insides have been sharing that this performance, in addition to training camp and beyond, have led to exactly that. Jameis Winston is expected to be the New Orleans Saints’ starting quarterback in 2021.
The #Saints have not yet made an official announcement, but all signs point to QB Jameis Winston being their starter, sources say. Given the way he played last week, this is not a surprise. It will also allow Taysom Hill to fill his valuable gadget/do-everything role.

Although it is true the the organization has not yet made an official announcement, this seemed like the most likely outcome following Monday night’s Saints and Jaguars match up. Some reports even going so far as to describe head coach Sean Payton’s conversation with Taysom Hill, who was competing for the same position, when the decision was made apparent within the facility.
When the New Orleans Saints take the field on Sunday, September 13th against the Green Bay Packers, the expectation is that #2 will lead them.
Winston is the right decision. The fact that Hill was a part of competing for the starting role though is indicative of the massive amount of work and dedication he’s put into the craft and should not go without credit. However, Winston gives the Saints the best opportunity to do what it is they want to do: compete and win.

There will be ups and downs. Not every game will include a 90% completion percentage or a 157.7 passer rating like fans got to take in on Monday. But the playbook in New Orleans just opened up vastly with Winston under center, and Hill back in his offensive weapon role. The latter being an important detail with the number of skill position players expected to be unavailable at the top of the season for various reasons.
Expect a heavy dose of two skill guys early, though. Winston’s connection with WR Marquez Callaway looks ready for the season and Alvin Kamara should be rested and ready to go as he looks to have been protected throughout the preseason.
Jameis Winston is the heir to future Hall of Famer Drew Brees in the Big Easy.
Jameis Winston has up to $7M available via incentives this season, tied to a variety of factors including playing time, passing statistics and team success. His path to reach those various incentives became clearer today.
