The New Orleans Saints have signed center Austin Reiter to their practice squad . It is being reported that he is expected to be promoted to the 53-man roster before the Saints face off against the Carolina Panthers in Week 2 and then reverted back to the practice squad. The signing comes after the Saints lost starting center Erik McCoy to a calf strain that will keep him out a few weeks.

Reiter started two years for the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. His past two seasons he started 28 games, allowed zero sacks in 2020, and had a 77.0 pass blocking grades from Pro Football Focus the past three seasons. Reiter should serve as a solid replacement for McCoy as he recovers. The Saints liked Cesar Ruiz at guard but they have the flexibility to move him to center. UDFA Calvin Throckmorton also stepped in at guard and had a great game against the Packers. Regardless the Saints have options and flexibility to cover for McCoy’s absence.
