The Dennis Allen era has gotten off to a pretty poor start in New Orleans. While there have been no indications that the team is looking to replace Allen, there are still some intriguing candidates out there, if they decide to go in that direction. So, let’s look at these four candidates that could be an option to replace Allen.

Lions OC Ben Johnson

The New Orleans Saints offense has been painful to watch this year. It’s boring, uninspiring and flat. The Detroit Lions were one of the worst teams in the NFL and have quickly become contenders in the NFC. This is in large part thanks to the offensive turnaround led by OC Ben Johnson.

Johnson took over as offensive coordinator in 2022, and the Lions found immediate success. They were third in the league in total yards and fifth in the league in points per game. They’ve continued this success being in the top ten in total yards, points per game, and total points.

The 37-year-old is an innovative offensive mind that could be the fresh start the Saints need.

Texans OC Bobby Slowik

The Houston Texans were looked at as an afterthought coming into the season. Coming off a 3-13-1 season, it was looking like the Texans would be picking near the top of the draft again. That turned out to be further from the truth. This is in large part thanks to first-year play caller Bobby Slowik.

Rookie QB C.J. Stroud has looked absolutely amazing. While Stroud deserves a lot of the credit himself, his play caller also deserves some. The Texans have also seen a huge increase in production from their WRs. Nico Collins looks like a whole new player, and rookie Tank Dell looks amazing. Slowik has done a fantastic job with this offense and deserves a lot of credit.

Vikings DC Brian Flores

How about a candidate who interviewed for the Saints HC job in 2022? Flores has previous head coaching experience with the Miami Dolphins. He finished his Dolphins campaign with a 24-25 record. In his defense, he took over a rebuilding Miami team, so the record isn’t as pretty.

I personally am not particularly a fan of defensive-minded coaches, but Flores at least deserves to be looked at. The Vikings defense has been a solid unit and is very well coached.

Ravens OC Todd Monken

The Ravens hired Todd Monken as OC this offseason. This was a great decision, as he’s been one of the best offensive play callers in football. The Ravens offense has been red-hot this season. Lamar Jackson looks like an MVP again, and rookie WR Zay Flowers looked great.

Monken has also had success at the college level. He served as OC and QB coach at the University of Georgia, winning two national championships.

His instant success with the Ravens will make him a prime candidate for a HC candidate this offseason.
