New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen appeared on the Rich Eisen Show to review some of the post-draft and OTA headlines surrounding the team. One of those topics included the new offense under coordinator Klint Kubiak.

Allen also noted the variability, modernization, and attention to detail of the scheme will be a healthy change for the offense. He also noted that the offense before Kubiak was often predictable to opposing defenses.

“There was a long time here where we saw a lot of the same plays,” Allen said. “We saw a lot of the same personnel groupings, same motions, and I think if you see them year in and year out, you kind of anticipate what’s coming.

Eisen asked Allen how the new offense will compare to what Saints’ fans are used to. Allen was straightforward in suggesting that it will be notably different.

“I think significantly different. We’ve been a lot of 11 personnel - three wide receivers, and one tight end in the game. I think we’re gonna see a little bit more of two tight ends in the game. We’re going to see a little bit more fullbacks being utilized in the game.”

The fullback element Allen mentions here has been observed through the multifaceted use of Taysom Hill during OTAs. He’s been spotted with both the running back and fullbacks.

Allen also noted that even with the numerous scheme changes, elements of the offense of old will still be included.

“We’re still going to have some of the things we’ve had in terms of the drop back passing game and utilizing three wide receiver sets and things of that nature. But I think you’re gonna see a little bit more motion to try and mess with the defenses’ eyes.”
