Upgrading the Saints Guard Position: The Case for Chance Warmack

Despite stellar offensive line play in 2016, the Saints still need to upgrade at the guard position.

The Saints have been blessed with a great offensive line for so long we have almost taken it for granted. We have a need to address the position of right guard this season. Jahri Evans may or may not return and is getting up there in age. His improved play in 2016 was unexpected and much appreciated by this Saints fan. We need to upgrade this position not only for Drew Brees but to provide a strong line for whoever has to step in post Brees. Let’s not kid ourselves, our favorite quarterback of all time is on his own time-clock.

With the weak guard class in the draft this year it would be best to address the need in free agency. Our depth at the position leaves much to be desired in any honest assessment. You have Tim Lelito, Senio Kelemete, untested Jack Allen, and not much else. Of those 3 I have the most confidence in Kelemete for depth. He played in 15 games and started 9 in 2016.

Many want the Saints to grab Ronald Leary and while I’m not totally against such a move, it would be a costly one. The competition for his services will be with others who have deeper pockets. I think a better UFA prospect would be Titans right guard Chance Warmack.

Chance earned an average salary a little north of $3 mil per year. Drafted in 2013 by the Titans, Warmack started in all games but 2 in 2015, before going on injured reserve early in 2016. This was due to a hand injury, which happened in September, and has had plenty of time to fully recover. The injury, to a finger if I’m not mistaken, doesn’t hurt his valuation like returning from a knee injury. The best reasons this signing would make sense are the following. He is only 25, turning 26 in September, and could be signed for a reasonable price. Another major factor in his favor is he has played his career entirely at the right guard position. He would be an upgrade for the immediate future and going forward.
