A look at some of the key stats that defined the game and determined the outcome of the Saints 28-27 loss to the Packers this Sunday.

Despite the fact that the Saints wound up losing this one to the Packers, there are a few positive things to take away this week. Moreso than any of the three weeks prior.

2

Facemask penalties called on Malcolm Jenkins.

3

Incorrect calls by the officials in favor of the Saints (No push off call on Colston TD, Jimmy Graham catch ruled complete despite hitting the ground, no fumble call on Sproles 4th quarter kickoff return).

45

Net yards rushing by the Saints.

54

Pass attempts by Drew Brees.

47

Consecutive games with a passing touchdown for Drew Brees, which ties Johnny Unitas' record.

0

Sacks by the Saints defense.

153

Yards receiving by Marques Colston

1

Touchdown by Joe Morgan, the first of his NFL career. It was an 80-yard bomb.

7

Passing TDs in the game by both teams combined.

0

Rushing TDs by either team in the game.

23

Yards of the longest Packers offensive play. Good news for the Saints defense, who didn't allow any huge plays.

3

Straight passing plays called by the Saints after 1st and goal from the 2-yard line.

2+

Turnover margin for the Saints, which still wasn't enough to get them the win.

4

Out of 5, runs by Mark Ingram on first down.

Saints kicker Garrett Hartley missed a potential game-winning field goal with just minutes remaining as the Saints lose to the Green Bay Packers, 28-27, and stay winless.

As much as the Packers and the officials tried to give the Saints their first win of the 2012 season, New Orleans refused to seize the opportunity as they still remain winless on the year.

Despite a few incorrect calls from the officials in their favor and a 2+ turnover margin by their otherwise porous defense, the Saints couldn't overcome key dropped passes by receivers, an absolutely horrid run game, and questionable play calling in the red zone.

The good news, if there is any, was that some of the Saints offense finally looked a little like their old selves again, something we haven't seen from them yet this season. Drew Brees passed for 446 yards and 3 TDs while Marques Colston tallied 153 yards receiving.

In the end, however, it just wasn't enough to overcome 421 yards of Green Bay offense and a four TD pass day from Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers both getting it done through the air.

The New Orleans Saints trail the Green Bay Packers 21-14 following a late first half scoring drive that ended with a Darren Sproles touchdown.

As usual the Saints rushing attack is practically non-existent. But two Drew Brees touchdown passes to Sproles and Marques Colston have kept them in the hunt. So far it's been the Jimmy Graham/Marques Colston show.

Drew Brees has now thrown a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive NFL games, tying him with Johnny Unitas for the longest streak in NFL history.

Aaron Rodgers has also been impressive through the air in the first half with three touchdowns, two of them to James Jones.

The Saints will start the second half with the ball.

Here are the inactive players for this afternoon's late Packers game - looks like Camp Ace Travaris Cadet is going to be dressing for possible action!!

According to a WWLTV tweet, the following New Orleans Saints players will be inactive for today's game with the Green Bay Packers:

No TUSK! for the Saints today, but it looks like Travaris Cadet has at least a chance to see the field, which may make some folks very happy.

And on the other side of the ball, the Saints have announced the Packers' inactives via Twitter:

New Orleans Saints @Saints

Rodgers or Roger, it doesn't make much difference. The Saints will exact their revenge on Sunday.

Last week the Packers vs. Seahawks contest was decided by an errant call as time expired. Many feel Green Bay was robbed of a win - that the call was egregious - causing immediate media and public uproar. Due to the 70,000 voice mails left at NFL headquarters overnight, the NFL and NFLRA finally came together on an eight year collective bargaining agreement in time for the Thursday night game that followed.

Other than Seahawk fans, everyone believes Green Bay was truly robbed of the victory. I disagree.

Green Bay scored a touchdown as a result of a bogus pass interference call on Cam Chancellor. Green Bay also scored a field goal on another drive that would have otherwise ended in a punt, thanks to the equally spurious hands to the face penalty incurred against Brandon Browner. That's 10 points Green Bay should have never scored. The last play isn't the only play.

Does this sound familiar? In every game the Saints played this year, one score was the difference. In every game, the replacement officials screwed the Saints for 7 points. The first was a phantom pass interference call giving the Redskins first and goal when they'd otherwise punt. That penalty resulted in 7 points for Washington. Almost the same circumstance occurred in week 2 against the Panthers, with the same result. Last week, Pierre Thomas and Drew Brees were robbed of an obvious touchdown because the officials obviously didn't understand the rules. Three consecutive weeks the Saints were given -7, and three consecutive weeks-despite playing poorly-they lost by one score. I'd say Saints fans (and players) have more injury as a result of the faux officials than does Green Bay.

When you add that to the isolation of Sean Payton thanks to Roger Goodell, the Saints players should have plenty to be angry about. I no longer expect my Saints to make the play-offs. I only wish that they unleash all of their anger on Sunday against Green Bay. In spite of their offense, Chicago's defense kept their contest against the Packers close because they kept punching Green Bay in the mouth, all the while mixing in body blows. If the Saints want to get off the snide, that's what they need to do.

The coaching staff and front office have done everything they can to keep "Goodell's Oppression" from becoming an excuse. It's time for a change in tactics. It should have always been the rally call. It should have been the number one motivational tactic. The finger should have been pointed at Goodell and the NFL (31 other owners stood silent) from the word go. This team needs to be unified in anger and seeking vengeance. Forget that "good character" hog wash. I want some deviant dysfunctional bad mother's mouthing off expletives to the camera and focusing the team's attention and crosshairs on Roger Goodell and whichever team lines up in front of them.

Fight fire with fire. Stop worrying about trying to not lose and take a tumultuous offseason's worth of pent up anger and frustration out on the guy in front of you. Dominate him. Forget the scheme, just whip his ass up and down the field. I don't care what the score is. I want to see anger, fury, and passion. When you don't care if you win or lose, when you stop trying to win 13 consecutive games or 10 of the remaining games to (hopefully) make the post-season, you lift that 800lb monkey off of your backs and just focus on winning your battle and nothing else. Let's face it, you're not going to the play-offs, so give up the hope, give in to anger and play ball. When you do that, you become a dangerous team nobody wants to play. That's when miracles occur.

Who would have thought a dysfunctional San Francisco team could do what they did last year? Who would have thought the Cardinals would be 3-0 at this moment, after playing New England and Philadelphia? They stopped caring about perceptions and what was or wasn't expected and started beating the guy across the LOS. Not long ago, no team had ever lost the last three regular season games and won the Super Bowl. If you just beat the tar out of the person playing opposite of you, you may also become the first team to start 0-3 and win the Super Bowl.

Green Bay is going down Sunday. The Saints will rush for more yardage. They'll utilize plays that slow down the Packer pass rush. They'll get a few illegal contact calls because they'll play the Packer pass targets rough, throwing off the timing Rodgers enjoys. Both teams will be 1-3 by game's end, and the Drew Brees for MVP campaign will officially be underway. Saints 37, Packers 34.

What will it take for the Saints to upend the Packers in Lambeau? A perfect Drew Brees, big-play paydays in the passing game, a good Will Herring, and a Toto-riffic defense that holds the line.

Two teams that came into the 2012 season with high hopes, the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers, square off today in a Week 4 matchup that has far less luster than the schedule makers envisioned back in the spring. It sees the Saints seeking their first win of the year while the 1-2 Packers are trying to recover from getting robbed and jobbed by the fake refs on Monday Night Football.

Well, the way I see it, that just means that both teams are very hungry for a win, and should be fighting for all they're worth this afternoon. Hopefully that will make for an entertaining and exciting game.

After careful consideration and research I have come up with the following four Hot Reads that the Saints must make correctly to emerge victorious...

Saints vs Packers coverage

Saints vs Packers preview

Acme Packing Company

Primary Option

Now more than ever, with the defense in disarray and the offense still trying to find its' groove, it begins and ends with PROTECTING DREW BREES so he can do what he does best. I'm afraid that at this point in the season, the way it's been playing out, it's going to take a perfect game from Brees for the Saints to get a win.

What I'd Like To See: The Saints must keep Brees upright and off the ground with time to throw, especially with ferocious sackmaster Clay Matthews (6 sacks in 2012) on the prowl, and with a sealed pocket to step into. From the stat sheet, that means 0 sacks and 0 INTs will be what does it.

_______________________

Checkdown # 1

Against the Chiefs, Devery Henderson nearly broke a long TD catch and run in the first half, and Jimmy Graham dropped a difficult but catchable deep ball over the middle that would have converted a crucial third down in the second half. These plays would have made a huge difference in that game, so the Saints absolutely must hit on these BIG PLAY PAYDAYS IN THE PASSING GAME to stun the top-ranked Packer pass defense they'll be facing this week.

What I'd Like To See: Either at least one huge scoring pass play (40 or more yards) or at least 5 big gains (25 or more yards) through the air. If they give me both, I might die from over-joy. And with the real refs back, I'll count defensive pass interference calls of 25 or more yards in this category.

_______________________

Checkdown # 2

You think things have been bad for the Saints defense so far? Well, this week, injuries to starting weakside linebacker David Hawthorne as well as his backup, Jonathan Casillas leave the Saints with only five healthy linebackers, and a probable starting trio of: Scott Shanle, Curtis Lofton, and Will Herring. So in addition to depending on the skills of an interim-interim head coach, they'll be depending on the mad skillz of the RISE OF THE BACKUP-BACKUP LINEBACKER.

What I'd Like To See: Good Will Herring is one of my favorite movies, and a good Will Herring is who needs to show up on the field. Six or more tackles, at least two for losses, and no major gaffes in pass coverage.

_______________________

Safety Valve

For this week's final piece of the victory puzzle, I'm going to call on the lyrical wisdom of the 70s and 80s superband Toto. It comes from a single that peaked at # 5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and topped the South African Singles Chart of 1978-79. Any guesses yet? Allow me to continue.

The Packers' high-octane offense has stalled a bit this year (does that sound familiar?), averaging only 226 passing yards and 78 rushing yards per game while scoring just 19 points each week. For a 2012 Saints defense that has allowed three teams to notch notable and even record-setting offensive output, it's not in the way you look or the things that you say that you do (you're welcome for the 10-minute Live in Amsterdam version), but it may be too much to ask them to shut down anyone's offense. So, please just HOLD THE LINE on a struggling Packer offense.

What I'd Like To See: An improving Saints defense that keeps the Packers' offense somewhere close to their 2012 season averages to date (within five points and 50 yards).

* * *

And even though the look and feel are new, this is STILL the place for our pre-pre-pre-game Open Thread. What are you wearing? What are you eating/drinking? Who are you watching in the early games as we await the 4:25 EDT kickoff? What do you think about these Hot Reads and the Saints' chances today?
